Seed is the critical determinant of agricultural production on which depends the performance and efficacy of other inputs. Quality seeds appropriate to different agro-climatic conditions and in sufficient quantity at affordable prices are required to raise productivity. Availability and use of quality seeds is not a onetime affair. Sustained increase in agriculture production and productivity necessarily requires continuous development of new and improved varieties of crops and efficient system of production and supply of seeds to farmers.

The Indian seed industry is the fifth largest in the world with an estimated value of INR 49 billion (USD 1.06 Billion) and with an annual growth rate of 12% to 13 %. The development of private seed industry is no more confined to just production and marketing of seed. It has well acquired technological strength to cater to the varietal needs of tomorrow. Along with public institutions and industries Indian farmers have in recent years adopting intensive cultivation practices in horticulture in order to meet the growing demand.

Karnataka is considered as hub of seed production and have been identified in the global seed map.  Vegetable seeds produced here are exported to every corner of the world by the private seed industry.  As vegetable seed industry is dominated by the private industry. Public sector industry is less identified in vegetable seed industry. Presently majority of the vegetables grown in the state are dominated by private hybrids rather than the public hybrids.   However, in crops like onion, chilli, beans etc. still varieties are ruling as there are no popular hybrids in this crop. Hence, there is a lot of scope to public sector organizations to compete with private seed companies in production of quality seeds of this type of vegetable crops.Public sectors can produce seeds in crops like onion, chilli, okra, leafy vegetables, seed spices and papaya.

Realizing the importance of quality seed in horticultural production, the University of Horticultural Sciences, Bagalkot started a separate independent Seed Unit at University main campus during 2013 under National Horticulture Mission with a budget outlay of 192.94 lakhs with Special Officer (Seeds) as administrative head to address the problems related to seed production, seed processing, seed testing and seed research activities of horticultural crops with production and supply good quality seeds to horticulture farmers under these following broad objectives.

OBJECTIVES

  1. Production and supply of Nucleus, Breeder, Foundation, Certified and Truthfully Labeled seeds of Horticultural crops of the region.
  2. Human Resource Development for quality seed production through training programmes, demonstrations and field days.
  3. Large scale production of quality seed under Scientists- Farmers Participatory Mode of Seed Production Programme.
  4. To popularize new high yielding varieties through large scale demonstration and seed production.
  5. Testing of seeds of farmers, seed growers, producers etc. for quality parameters like germination, purity and health.
  6. To conduct research related to seed production, physiology, processing, testing and seed health as per the needs of farming community.
  7. To disseminate information on new varieties through trainings on seed production, processing, storage and packaging, quality control and seed health and conducting demonstrations and field day.
  8. To make linkage with crop improvement projects, seed industry, seed certification agencies, NGO’s KVK’s and farmers.

 SEED PRODUCTION ACTIVITIES

Seed production is an important activity of university to reach farmers and also to earn revenue. Seeds of various crops varieties are produced in the land available in the university and also in the farmer’s fields are sold to the farmers. Seed production activity in the university is achieved by taking up of seed production activities in farmer’s field under Scientist- Farmer participatory mode of seed production programme implemented by the Seed Unit, UHS, Bagalkot. Under this programme quality seeds are produced in the farmer’s field by providing basic seeds. All the technical guidance related to seed production will be provided by the scientists of the university. This programme also includes buy back system as seeds produced by the farmers will be procured by the university at prefixed procurement price only after meeting quality standards. Every year Seed Unit is producing around 100 quintals of quality seeds in University farms and also under Scientist- Farmer participatory mode of seed production programme.
