MESSAGE OF VICE-CHANCELLOR
The University of Horticultural Sciences, Bagalkot Karnataka is the third Horticulture University in the country and first in the State, which came into existence through a Special Ordinance issued by the Governor of Karnataka vide No.2 of 2008 on 22nd November, 2008 and duly enacted by Karnataka Act No.11 of 2010 dated 13-05-2010. Bagalkot was rightly chosen for University headquarters as the district is known for its rich horticultural production base of grapes, pomegranate, banana, lime, sapota, ber, fig, vegetables, beetle vine, coconut, spices and medicinal plants. This region possesses congenial climate for production of all kinds of horticulture crops besides its rich historical and cultural heritage making it an ideal place as headquarter of the Horticulture University.
The University of Horticultural Sciences, Bagalkot has its jurisdiction covering 23 districts of Karnataka with nine colleges, four Diploma Courses in Horticulture, 11 Research Stations including three Regional Horticultural Research and Extension Centers and 10 AICRP centres, 12 Horticultural Extension Education Units (HEEUs) and one Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) spread over all the agro climatic zones of Karnataka.
With a vision to attain excellence in academics by imparting quality education to develop professional human resource with entrepreneurial skills, addressing the thrust areas of research to develop advanced technologies and to promote farmer centric transfer of technology for holistic growth of horticulture sector, the University is striving hard to attain its vision with qualitative faculty.
Our mission is end to end approach, resolving intersectoral issues for addressing problem areas and promoting multi-dimensional reforms in research, teaching, extension for production, processing, marketing and institution of time bound accomplishments with a sense of urgency.
It is a matter of great pride for University of Horticultural Sciences, Bagalkot to have achieved new pinnacle in academic excellence, research and transfer of technology through innovative outreach activities. The University is bestowed with National Excellence award from ICAR for securing first position in securing highest JRF awards in the consecutive years 2017 and 2018 with award of 45 PG JRF Scholarships to its graduates under Programme category Horticulture and Forestry in the year 2019. University is also awarded with National Level Award “State Best University Award for NSS” during the year 2017-18.
To cater to the needs of location specific problems in different regions/districts of the State, the research activities are organized both at the level of Agro-climatic Zones and on thematic basis and are being pursued with focus on emerging issues and emphasis on addressing cross-cutting issues through comprehensive multi-disciplinary approach for household food security, farm profitability, sustainability of production systems, poverty alleviation and livelihood improvement. In order to cater to location specific research the University has established Horticultural Research Stations in most of the Agro-Climatic Zones.
The Directorate of Extension, University of Horticultural Sciences(UHS),Bagalkot has been proactive in reaching the unreached farmers by organizing exclusive need based frontline extension activities for effective dissemination of recently released technologies. Various extension activities are being organized for the benefit of farmers in general and all the stake holders in particular. Thotagarike Mela is the biggest event of Horticulture Fairs conducted by UHS, Bagalkot with a participation of three to four lakhs farmers every year to showcase new innovations of the University.
The special outreach program such as horti-app and theme programs like Soil Health Mission, Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav, Adarsh Gram and Krishi Bhagya etc., have been greatly facilitated. Green Graduation programme is another unique programme of the university, appreciated by many environmentalists. Yet, we have miles to go and I am more confident that our University will stand unique amongst horticulture education institutes in near future in the country and meet the challenges of horticulture farming sector through dedicated and concentrative efforts in all our endeavours.
